Cylindrical Grinder
A cylindrical grinding machine is used to shape the outside of an object or a workpiece. It is meant to work on cylinders, rods, and other similar workpieces. It can also work on other shapes but the workpiece must have a central axis of rotation. Its prime purpose is to produce high-precision goods by extracting small amounts of metal from the material. It improves the quality of the surface and lowers the roughness to give finishing to the material.
Parts of a cylindrical grinding machine
- Base
- Wheel Head
- Grinding Wheel
- Headstock
- Chuck
- Belt Pulley
- Tailstock
- Table
Working Principle
- The workpiece is placed between the headstock and tailstock.
- The workpiece rotates in one direction while the grinding wheel rotates in the opposite direction.
- The workpiece is rotated between the centers rapidly.
- The grinding wheel does the actual grinding part by rotation at different speeds from the workpiece.
- The workpiece is attached to the wheel head, which moves the grinder in patterns like plunge or traverse movements.
- Both the table and the grinding wheel works in diverse movement.
- It works in a similar way to a lathe machine would, except a grinding wheel is used in this instead of a stationary cutting tool.
- Cylindrical Grinding Machine is of different types – outside diameter grinding, inside diameter grinding, plunge grinding, creep feed grinding, and centreless grinding.
Applications
- High-precision work in metalworking, automobile, military, electric, and plumbing industries.
- Manufacturing and finishing of metal goods such as rods, coils, tubes, and covers.
